At the laundromat, I often find myself watching the motion inside the washing machine. Nothing in particular is happening. The laundry is just turning, and yet I get drawn into that strange, indefinable movement. As a child, I remember being pulled toward the flames of a fire, watching them for a long time.

That fire, too, is just a repetition of similar motion. And yet, somehow, I find myself thinking, “let me watch just a little longer.” Humans are said to have evolved to direct attention toward things that move. A rustle in the grass might be prey, or it might be danger. Not missing movement was a skill we couldn’t do without to survive. But I suspect that alone doesn’t fully explain it.

Neither the flames of a fire nor the shirts and towels turning inside a washing machine ever repeat exactly the same motion. The flames shift shape from one instant to the next, and the laundry takes on a new form with every turn.

In psychology, movement like this is thought to draw our attention in a pleasant way. Rachel and Stephen Kaplan, who proposed attention restoration theory, called such stimuli “soft fascination.” Like a fire or the waves, they hold your attention lightly while leaving room in your mind. Rather than seizing you, they let you rest your gaze on them. And it’s precisely because of this, they suggest, that our worn-out attention quietly recovers underneath.

The degree of it—being alike yet not the same—seems to matter too. The psychologist Daniel Berlyne held that we feel most at ease with things that are neither too simple nor too complex, somewhere right in the middle. Too monotonous and we quickly grow bored; too complex and we tire. A fire, or the shirts inside a washing machine, are forever drifting through that “just-right middle.” And so, without boredom and without fatigue, we can go on gazing.

There is no great event here, no dramatic change. Only a motion that never comes out the same twice, repeating.

Being able to watch the waves at the shore is probably the same. They come in and draw back, and nothing much happens. Most waves are born from wind, they say. But the wind alone doesn’t decide their shape. Wind that blew on a distant sea, the contours of the seabed, that day’s tides, the pull of the wave that just receded—all of it layers together into that one, singular form. With the sound of the water as well, you could watch forever.

Waves, fire, the motion inside a washing machine. None of them seizes our attention; they draw it in quietly. Alike, and never the same. That may be why we can keep watching. And while we do, the noise crowding the mind slowly thins, and our thoughts, perhaps, settle into order.
