Drawing, Touching

A photographic work that records a hand holding a pencil, using a scanner — a device that scans objects with light. During capture, the subject is necessarily touching the glass. A light source moving across the surface generates the image by tracing the subject in one direction. Unlike a camera, a scanner is not a device for choosing a composition; it is a device that records the motion of tracing a surface itself. Slight changes in speed and pressure distort the form, the same areas are scanned more than once, and the traces overlap within a single image.

The distortion is made by the artist's own hand moving the device. Drawing and touching here become one movement.
